Interlocked flexible metal hoses
OMMC Italflex Srl manufactures interlocked flexible metal hoses for industrial applications requiring flexibility, resistance to vibration, and reliable mechanical performance. Interlocked metal hoses (also known as stripwound / wound metal hoses) are produced through a mechanical interlocking process without longitudinal welding.
What is an interlocked flexible metal hose?
An interlocked flexible metal hose is created by helically winding a profiled metal strip onto a mandrel and mechanically locking the edges to form a flexible, resilient hose. Unlike corrugated metal hoses, interlocked hoses are not seam-welded: their strength and flexibility come from the interlocking profile itself.
- Mechanical protection combined with flexibility
- High resistance to vibration, impact, and external damage
- Long fatigue life under dynamic loads
- Suitable for applications with movement, misalignment, or frequent handling
Manufacturing
Production is carried out using dedicated forming and interlocking lines, enabling consistent profile geometry and repeatable quality. We supply both standard products and custom-made solutions according to customer specifications.
Materials
- Stainless steel (AISI 304 / AISI 316L)
- Carbon steel
- Other metallic alloys on request
Advantages
- High flexibility
- No longitudinal welding
- Good resistance to vibration and mechanical fatigue
- Movement and misalignment compensation
- Long service life in harsh industrial environments
- Custom sizes and configurations available
Single vs Double Interlock configurations
Depending on the required mechanical resistance and duty cycle, interlocked hoses may be supplied in different constructions. Our technical team can support you in selecting the correct configuration for your project.
Single Interlock
- Lightweight and cost-effective
- Suitable for medium mechanical stress
Double Interlock
- Enhanced mechanical strength
- Increased resistance to vibration and handling
- Ideal for heavy-duty applications
Interlocked vs welded
| Interlocked | Welded |
|---|---|
| No longitudinal weld | Welded seam present |
| Higher flexibility | Lower flexibility |
| Better fatigue resistance | More rigid |
| Handles dynamic loads | Mostly static |
Interlocked vs corrugated metal hoses
Interlocked hoses and corrugated hoses are both flexible metallic solutions, but they are typically designed for different purposes. Choosing the correct hose depends on pressure, temperature, and mechanical requirements.
| Interlocked metal hose | Corrugated metal hose |
|---|---|
| Mechanically locked strip (no longitudinal welding) | Formed corrugated tube (often with braid) |
| Excellent mechanical protection | Designed for pressure containment and fluid transfer |
| Not typically used for high internal pressure | Suitable for pressure transfer (depending on design) |
| Ideal for exhaust, protection, and conveying | Ideal for liquids/gases under pressure |
Applications
- Industrial plants and machinery
- Mechanical engineering equipment
- Energy sector and power generation
- Exhaust systems and ducting
- Cable protection conduit
- Low-pressure conveying of gases and granular materials
